The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan or TGSL

tgsl or Texas guaranteed student loan

The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation or TGSL, guarantees student loans for borrowers throughout the state of Texas. Eligibility for these loans is determined by the financial aid office of the student’s school. Like all other student loans, loans backed by the TGSL are subject to interest rates which are set by the federal government each year on July 1. The interest rate of these loans will never rise higher than 8.25%. Students taking advantage of this loan are provided with a six month grace period following graduation or following the time at which they cease to be enrolled in school at least half-time, before they are required to begin student loans repayment. The following loans are offered through backing by the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation:
  • Subsidized Stafford Loan
  • Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
  • PLUS loan for parents

When borrowers are considering which type of loan would best suit their needs they should consider the fact that each loan has its own advantages and disadvantages. The Subsidized Stafford Loan is available for both graduate and undergraduate study. While the student is in school, the interest on the loan is paid by the federal government. This loan is need based, so not all applicants may qualify. The Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is also available for graduate and undergraduate study. Unlike the Subsidized Stafford Loan, with this loan the student is responsible for the interest that is accrued on the loan while they are in school. This is not a needs based loan, so students may be eligible for the loan even if they do not show a financial need for the loan. The PLUS loan is only available for parents. Unlike the two aforementioned loans, the interest rate ceiling on this loan is 9% instead of 8.25%. Repayment may begin immediately or borrowers have the option of delaying repayment until 60 days following the last loan disbursement. Borrowers are given up to 10 yeas to repay. No subsidy is provided for interest while the student is in school. For more information about the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan or TGSL, please visit the resorces below:
