The NSLC or the National Student Loan
Center provides a variety of resources and information about
students loans to prospective students and their families. The NSLC
also offers several loan products for students, including the
following:
- Federal Consolidation loan
- Federal PLUS loan for parents
- Subsidized Stafford Loan
- Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
The National Student Loan Center does not require credit
checks for applicants applying for these loans and borrowers may
have up to 10 years on
repaying student loans. The
federal student consolidation loan program gives parents and
students the opportunity to consolidate federal student loans in
order to take advantage of lower interest rates and lower fixed
monthly payments. Loans must be in the grace period or repayment
period in order to qualify. Several different loans are eligible
for consolidation including the following:
- Federal Stafford Loans, unsubsidized and subsidized
- Direct Stafford Loans
- Federal Supplemental Loans for Students
- Students/ALAS and Student PLUS Loans
- Federal Perkins Loans, formerly National Defense/National
Direct Student Loans (NDSL)
- Health Professions Student Loans, including Loans for
Disadvantaged Students (HPSL)
- Federal Insured Student Loans (FISL)
- Federal PLUS (Parent) Loans
- Direct PLUS Loans
- Federal Consolidation Loans, unsubsidized and subsidized
- Direct Consolidation Loans, unsubsidized and subsidized
- Nursing Student Loans (NSL)
The NSLC PLUS loan program gives parents of
students the option to borrow up to 100% of their child’s cost of
education. Parents are eligible for this loan even if they do not
demonstrate a financial need and regardless of income. The
NSLC Subsidized Stafford Loan is available for
both graduate and undergraduate study. While the student is in
school, the interest on the loan is paid by the federal government.
This loan is need based, so not all applicants may qualify. The
NSLC Unsubsidized Stafford Loan is also available
for graduate and undergraduate study. Unlike the Subsidized
Stafford Loan, with this loan the student is responsible for the
interest that is accrued on the loan while they are in school. This
is not a needs based loan, so students may be eligible for the loan
even if they do not show a financial need for the loan.
